Housing Diplomacy: US Housing Aid to Latin America, 1949-1973

During the Cold War, the State Department sent architects, engineers, and legislation specialists to almost every Latin American and Caribbean nation to develop housing along US lines. These International Housing efforts were part of larger development aid programs in the region and were implemented to secure alliances, suppress radicalism, and promote the American way of life abroad. The dissertation focuses on three case studies--in the Caribbean, Guatemala, and Peru--to examine the influence the United States had on Latin America's built environment and show how architecture has functioned as an important component of US foreign policy. The dissertation demonstrates how Cold War housing aid introduced new materials and construction techniques, encouraged homeownership by promoting mortgage financing, and helped supplant local, Latin American urban forms with US architectural types and city plans in order to create the image of a modernizing, capitalist, and western-oriented nation

The Archaeology of Fazzan, Volume 1

This book seeks to advance knowledge of human settlement and adaptation in the world's largest desert, the sahara. Previous studies focussed on the prehistoric phases but this study takes a wider historical and geographical perspective. It sets out to combine the results of several field campaigns, their histories and methodologies. We look at fieldwork, fortifications, funerary structures, irrigation, rock art and human occupation. The final summary looks at the current state of research and offers a platform for future investigations

Food and Agriculture in PNG

Agriculture dominates the rural economy of Papua New Guinea (PNG). More than five million rural dwellers (80% of the population) earn a living from subsistence agriculture and selling crops in domestic and international markets. Many aspects of agriculture in PNG are described in this data-rich book. Topics include agricultural environments in which crops are grown; production of food crops, cash crops and animals; land use; soils; demography; migration; the macro-economic environment; gender issues; governance of agricultural institutions; and transport. The history of agriculture over the 50 000 years that PNG has been occupied by humans is summarised. Much of the information presented is not readily available within PNG. The book contains results of many new analyses, including a food budget for the entire nation. The text is supported by 165 tables and 215 maps and figures

The assertion of rights to agro-pastoral land in North Cameroon: a cascade to violence?

What are the key causalities in the linkages between environmental resource scarcity, the non-violent assertion of rights to the environment and the (non) avoidance of violence itself? Focusing on the natural resource land, the author studies three different cases of conflict over land at the local level in Diamar‚, Baba Deli and Kubadje, in the extreme north of Cameroon, from 2001 to 2004, using different sociological, geographical and anthropological methods. She argues the need to come up with a kind of model to structure research in the field of environmental scarcity and security, constructs such a model, and, in the process, discusses the concepts and submodels to be used. The Metabolism of Islands

This book makes the case for why we should care about islands and their sustainability. Islands are hotspots of biocultural diversity and home to 600 million people that depend on one-sixth of the earth’s total area, including the surrounding oceans, for their subsistence. Today, they are at the frontlines of climate change and face an existential crisis. Islands are, however, potential “hubs of innovation” that are uniquely positioned to be leaders in sustainability and climate action. This volume argues that a full-fledged program on “island industrial ecology” is urgently needed, with the aim of offering policy-relevant insights and strategies to sustain small islands in an era of global environmental change. The nine contributions in this volume cover a wide range of applications of socio-metabolic research, from flow accounts to stock analysis and their relationship to services in space and time. They offer insights into how reconfiguring patterns of resource use will allow island governments to build resilience and adapt to the challenges of climate change
